Build a Community Network of Stroke Survivors and Other Stakeholders

Activities to build the statewide network include:
  • Provide coordination support to link local stroke survivor support groups into the larger SSEEO network through information sharing and ongoing contact.
  • Increase education and outreach through a series of topical audio calls to share promising practices on treatment and prevention of stroke, as well as information on evolving state and federal programs and policies. (This is the first-of-its-kind SSEEO Monthly Toll-Free Statewide Stroke Support group.)
  • Conduct an annual state-wide meeting to review priorities, exchange information and to set a course of action for SSEEO. (This activity may potentially be combined with a Lobby Day in Springfield .)
  • Increase the SSEEO membership - recruitment at health fairs, stroke support group meeting appearances and other venues.

Provide an Active Presence and a Common Voice on Policy Issues Related to Prevention and Treatment of Stroke in Illinois

Activities include:

  • Outreach to local stroke support clubs such as sponsoring a "Speaker Series" featuring prominent speakers (researchers, elected officials, medical professionals or drug company leaders)
  • SSEEO-coordinated stroke screenings (potentially at legislative health/senior events).
  • Annual Stop Stroke Advocacy Conference and Lobby Day in Springfield . (This may potentially be combined with Annual Meeting.)
  • Patient-focused sensitivity training materials and/or presentations by stroke survivors for healthcare professionals.
Members joining SSEEO will automatically be enrolled in AHA/ASA's YOU'RE THE CURE! Advocacy Network, enabling them to keep informed and to take action on issues of concern.

Create accessible resources for stroke survivors and their caregivers.

Activities related to materials development include:

  • Create a dedicated website (separate from AHA/ASA) for stroke survivors to access important Illinois/SSEEO-specific information and resources.
  • Develop or update hospital discharge materials, stroke resource materials and patient education information.
  • Compile/update Illinois Resource Guide for Stroke Survivors.
  • Quarterly newsletter for SSEEO members and the general stroke stakeholder community.
Conduct an evaluation to explore the need and logistics for establishing a stroke peer visitor program based on the Mended Hearts program.

Leadership development for stroke survivors.

Activities related to leadership development include:

  • Small group trainings for volunteer Regional Advocacy Chairs.
  • Workshops at the annual conference - for example, " Tell Your Story " or media training.
  • Survivor-led and coordinated visits with legislators, editorial boards, business and community leaders and other key decision makers.
  • Potential for engagement of outstanding leaders in other AHA/ASA leadership activities such as the annual AHA/ASA's National Research Lobby Day in Washington , D.C.
